The Protect Our Communities Foundation is looking for a legal and administrative assistant to support a small non-profit which fights for local clean energy and to protect Southern California electric and natural gas ratepayers from the costs of unnecessary utility spending. POC’s mission statement is “to defend communities and nature in San Diego County, Imperial County, and Northern Baja California. We advance better energy and environmental solutions through advocacy and law.”


The position will support the POC team with a focus on regulatory matters before the California Public Utilities Commission.  An ideal candidate demonstrates a passion for the science and law of energy regulation to support POC’s fight against fossil fuel infrastructure development and for a transition to sustainable, local, distributed power systems. The legal and administrative assistant will work as part of a small team of attorneys and experts active before the Public Utilities Commission, in court, and in the community. This full time position provides benefits, and is located in the San Diego area.  Job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work with board to prepare, track and update organizational budgets;
  • Track hours, expenses and costs for the organization and its consultants, employees and contractors;
  • Use QuickBooks to prepare costs, expenses and revenues reports;
  • Bookkeeping – track and verify expense payments;
  • Make required filings with the Commission and other regulatory agencies, and in cases in state and federal court using e-filing systems;
  • Oversee, review, proofread, cite and quality check regulatory filings, legal pleadings, and exhibits in an accurate, complete, and timely manner;
  • Track and manage regulatory dockets to follow regulatory requirements and procedural deadlines and ensure timely response;
  • Represent POC on California energy regulation in the community, in public participation processes, before decision-makers, and with ally organizations;
  • Coordinate with outside counsel and ally organizations, including San Diego grassroots organizations;
  • Interact with external contacts and POC team members in a respectful and professional manner;
  • Problem solve technical issues related to software, workflow, documents and data;
  • Handle billings and invoices;
  • Prepare correspondence, schedule appointments, make travel arrangements, organize and manage files, order office supplies, and other miscellaneous office duties as assigned;
  • Initiate and complete assigned projects as instructed and with a sense of urgency; and
  • Assist POC team with other related assignments.


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience;
  • Legal assistant or paralegal experience is preferred, but not required;
  • Practical accounting or bookkeeping experience is preferred;
  • Passionate about the environment, particularly renewable energy;
  • Experience in advocacy or grassroots activism, energy, or finance fields preferred, but not required;
  • Regulated industry or utility experience is preferred, but not required;
  • Ability to work effectively in an independent setting;
  • Excellent multi-tasking skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people/colleagues, including outside attorneys and business associates;
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of computer applications, specifically Microsoft Word, QuickBooks, Excel and Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat;
  • Exercise professional judgment, integrity, respect, and professionalism.
