Why Utilities Don’t Want Rooftop SolarHere’s a great article on the reason utilities across the country are not jumping on the rooftop solar bandwagon, despite strong support from homeowners, state and federal incentives, and decreasing costs. Part of POC’s mission is to push for feed-in tariffs, and other incentives for local homeowners and business owners to invest in rooftop solar, and educate people about the problems with large scale solar and wind, and the destructive high-voltage transmission lines (utility’s bread and butter) that must be built for these projects. Thanks for all you do, Denise! Additionally, SDG&E ’s rate structure is in tiers. The Third tier is nearly twice the price of the first. So, if you can only afford 1000w on your roof, (a “bell curve” system is about 4000w ) if it replaces that top tier, economically speaking its like buying 2000w) SDG&E says it wants to get rid of the mandatory lowest tier. Look for this legistation to raise its ugly head. –I say definately not. Its there for all the right reasons, both to encourage conservation and to help thoses who genuinely need the break.
